MOST POPULAR WINE REGIONS OF NEW SOUTH WALES

HUNTER VALLEY

On a tour of New South Wales wine, the historic Hunter Valley wine region is a must-visit. It was established in the 1860s and today it’s one of Australia’s best-known and most-visited wine regions, thanks to its easy two-hour drive from Sydney, award-winning cellar doors, top restaurants and stunning scenery. The Hunter Valley is famous for its unique Semillon wines, alongside ChardonnayShiraz and a growing list of alternative varieties suited to the warm climate.

SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS

On Sydney’s doorstep, the Southern Highlands is a popular destination for its wine tastings in boutique cellar doors, regional produce and top restaurants in historical towns. Expect sophisticated country charm – this is where national parks and forests meet formal gardens, celebrity-owned estates and boutique shopping. The climate is quite cool, thanks to the higher altitude, and there’s a small but growing community of independent producers crafting elegant wines, including Chardonnay, Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon.

CANBERRA DISTRICT

Surrounding the city of Canberra, the lush and hilly Canberra District wine region produces premium cool-climate wines. It’s home to around 140 vineyards that span New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. Discover elegant Shiraz and fresh Riesling, plus a range of other red and white wines. There’s also contemporary cellar doors to visit, a fast-growing food scene and all the attractions of Canberra a short drive away.

ORANGE

About three-and-a-half hours west of Sydney, Orange is one of the highest vineyard areas in Australia. The weather is relatively cool and the landscape is dominated by the now extinct Mount Canobolas volcano. This young but fast-growing region has become a serious dining destination thanks to its brilliant wines, restaurants and local produce. There are more than 60 wineries and top-quality examples of Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, plus elegant sparkling wines

MUDGEE

The Mudgee wine region is a popular weekend getaway thanks to its flourishing food and wine scene, arts community and boutique shopping, set within a historic, down-to-earth region about three-and-a-half hours from Sydney. Its wine community is known for innovation and sustainability, so expect architectural cellar doors, creative winemakers, and vibrant red and white wines grown in sustainable vineyards.

Tyrrells Hunter Valley Chardonnay

Tyrrell's Hunter Valley Chardonnay

Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley Chardonnay

The grapes for our Hunter Valley Chardonnay were sourced from a number of sites across the Pokolbin area, each of which has a slightly different microclimate and so brings its own unique personality to the blend.  A cool summer then gave us even, stress-free ripening with some heat around Australia Day that was perfectly timed at the final stages of ripening. With an early budburst and later than normal harvesting, the fruit had a longer than normal hang time, which meant that all of the fruit had wonderful flavours balanced by a high natural acidity. The grapes were both hand and machine picked before gentle pressing and fermentation. After cold settling for two days, the juice began fermentation in stainless steel tanks before being transferred and matured in new and older French oak barriques. After oak maturation, the wine spent an extended time on lees in stainless steel for an additional nine months to build texture and mouthfeel. A method used extensively in Burgundian winemaking.

Textbook modern, medium-bodied Hunter Valley Chardonnay to be enjoyed with a variety of cuisines. The nose shows a great mixture of citrus, white stone fruit, some oak spice as well as just a hint of solids complexity. The palate is medium bodied, with a lively fruit intensity and texture through the mid-palate, with a refreshing acid profile.

Alcohol – 12.5%
Cellaring – Designed for immediate enjoyment

Trentham Estate Shiraz

Trentham Estate Shiraz

THE GRAPES Shiraz, also known as Syrah, is thought to originate from the Rhone Valley in France and it continues to be the most predominant variety in this region. In 1831 James Busby collected cuttings from France and brought them to Australia. By the 1860’s Shiraz was established as one of the most important grape varieties in Australia and has developed an excellent reputation and is sought after worldwide.

THE VINTAGE ‘Late but great’ sums up the 2017 vintage. Good rain in spring, followed by mild weather and only short heat waves resulted in grapes ripening slowly on the vine. It was certainly an unusually late harvest but the wines are something to be proud of – well balanced fruit, plenty of flavour and distinct varietal aromas.

THE WINEMAKING Once harvested, the grapes were de-stemmed and pumped into the fermentation vessel. The fruit was fermented on skins for 7 days before pressing. After pressing, the wine was matured in a combination of new and aged French and American oak barrels. The wine was then blended and bottled in June 2017.

THE WINE Dark vibrant red in colour with lifted aromas of black cherry and chocolate. On the palate concentrated dark fruit flavours are complimented by subtle oak characters of mocha and spice. Full bodied and well-structured with firm ripe tannins providing balance and length.

THE FOOD Excellent match with any grilled red meat or a rich casserole.

ANALYSIS Varietal: Shiraz Alcohol: 14.5% Acid: 6.4 g/l pH: 3.51 Sweetness: Dry

Deen VAT Series Duriff

Deen VAT 1 Duriff

Deen VAT 1 Duriff

Deep purple with vibrant red hues. Black plum, fruitcake, hints of liquorice and dark choc notes. The palate is rich and fleshy. Dark fruit and chocolate with hints of Liquorice. Subtle oak and a
defining tannin structure.

Vineyard: Riverina, Heathcote (multiple GIs)

The Riverina fruit for this wine was grown on one of the original Durif plantings by the late Deen De Bortoli on our estate vineyards at Nericon and Bilbul. The Heathcote fruit is sourced from a vineyard situated on the Eastern side of the Mt Camel range on deep, ancient Cambrian soil.

Viticulture

2020 will be regarded as one of the most eventful vintages on record with drought, fire, flood and then a pandemic. Fortunately the smoke did not impact on the fruit in the Riverina or Heathcote regions. A dry winter and early spring resulted in some restriction of growth and yield but which resulted in rich flavours in the Durif. February and March had average temperatures meaning the fruit was picked in good physical condition and ripeness levels.

Vinification of DEEN VAT 1 DURIFF

The vineyard is frequently visited during the ripening season, monitoring the fruit for the desired rich flavours and ripe tannins to determine the optimum time to harvest the fruit. The fruit was destemed into our potters and fermented to dryness. Then gently pressed and settled. About 15% remains in stainless tanks unoaked to retain lively fruit freshness whilst the remainder is matured in a combination of new and older American and French oak barrels for 12 months before blending and bottling.

Maturation

About 15% remains in stainless tanks unoaked to retain lively fruit freshness whilst the remainder is matured in a combination of new and older American and French oak barrels for 12 months before blending and bottling.

Food Pairing for DEEN VAT 1 Duriff

Will accompany a char grilled Tomahawk Rib-Eye Steak perfectly or a hearty Lentil and Sweet potato stew.

The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are picked in the cool of the night to retain acid. Ferments are warm to add interest and mouth feel. Harmony in the wine comes from the blending of the two varieties over numerous vintages. A secondary ferment is then undertaken in tank to add weight and a lovely creamy texture to the wine.

The Accomplice Semillon Sauvignon

The Accomplice Semillon Sauvignon

The Accomplice Semillon Sauvignon

Let the Accomplice be your partner in wine. Cheeky, fun, easy drinking wine for everyday.

Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc from select vineyards in the Riverina were chosen for their intense varietal characters.

Drought, fire and flood, followed by plague. The 2020 vintage threw everything at us, fortunately the smoke did not reach the Riverina and impact the fruit. The drought again impacted us with a dry winter and early spring. Thus resulting in some restriction of growth and yield. Leading to good quality fruit. Harvest began 7 Days later than the previous few years beginning after Australia Day.

Brokenwood Cricket Pitch Red Blend

Brokenwood Cricket Pitch Red Blend

Brokenwood Cricket Pitch Red – A true ‘South Eastern Australian’ blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and  Shiraz, sourced from premium regions including Beechworth – Vic, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra – SA.

This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz from South Eastern Australia. Aromas of juicy berry fruit and subtle spice lead to a fruit-driven, medium-bodied mouthfeel. This is a drink-now style that will further soften with medium term bottle maturation.

Berry/leafy aromas are to the fore, due to the wine being almost two thirds Cabernet Sauvignon. A beautiful deep colour with youthful tints. Ripe Cabernet fruit complimented by the spice and plushness of the Shiraz component. Fine long tannins and acid line will see this age well over the medium term. A lovely drinking wine as always.

A combination of static and rotary fermenters used, after 2-3 day cold soak prior to ferment. This wine is matured in French oak up to 18 months with a small percentage being in new oak barrels.

Pairs well with rich seafood, pasta and light meat dishes.

A drink now style that will further soften with medium term bottle maturation.

The first vintage was picked in 1973 and while none of the original partners claimed to know anything about viticulture, the wine received praise, and attracted a loyal following from the first vintage.

It was a labour of love for the partners, and the friends and family they conscripted to help who were seduced by the promise of clean country air, fine wine, food and company in exchange for help on the vineyard. Everyone pitched in to pick the grapes which were carried to the winery in buckets in the back seat of Len Evans’ Bentley.  Weary bodies were put up in dorm-style accommodation which still remains today.
