River Retreat Merlot

River Retreat Merlot

2017 MERLOT

Winemaking – Harvested at ideal ripeness the grapes were crushed and fermented on skins for 7 days with regular pump-overs to extract colour and flavour. After pressing, the wine was aged with select French oak before blending and bottling.

River Retreat Merlot- Deep red in colour showing aromas of dark cherry and plum with a touch of black olive; soft and mellow with flavours of plum and mulberry. A touch of oak and soft ripe tannins make this an easy drinking wine with flavour and length.

With Food – Great match with tomato based Mediterranean dishes.

The wetlands of the Murray Darling Region are integral to maintaining the health of the unique, yet fragile ecosystems of South Eastern Inland Australia. Trentham Estate’s ‘River Retreat’ range of wines is based on an initiative dedicated to raising awareness of these wetlands. Each purchase of the River Retreat label results in a donation to the La Trobe University Foundation, Mildura.

Trentham Estate is proud to announce its continued commitment to water conservation and wetland restoration, through a new partnership with the Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group Ltd.

Trentham Estate has long strived to provide support to localised Murray Darling research activities for sustainable water supply, quality and capacity. With the recent closure of the Lower Basin Laboratory in Mildura, it has looked to another respected organisation to support during a time of much strain on the local environment. For over 20 years, the Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group Ltd has worked on wetlands throughout the Murray-Darling Basin, restoring and improving the management of wetlands throughout the catchment, of the Murray-Darling Basin.

Trentham Estate’s River Retreat label, now vegan friendly, will proudly continue Trentham’s dedication to corporate responsibility – whereby every bottle purchased of River Retreat wine will result in a donation towards the Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group.

With many great projects currently underway in the far-west region of NSW, the Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group will benefit greatly from these ongoing funds.

“We are thrilled to be able to contribute to the restoration of our precious river system and we are confident that the Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group will make a real difference within the river region.” says winemaker Anthony Murphy.

Trentham Estate

Trentham is a small boutique winery located on the banks of the Murray River. It produces wines of outstanding value for money with great varietal fruit flavours.

New South Wales

Australia’s first vines were planted in New South Wales on the Farm Cove foreshore. The first commercial wine was made there, and the first wine exported to England – by Gregory Blaxland in 1823. Given the size and climate diversity of NSW and its large population, it is surprising that the state does not play a bigger role in Australian wine. It is a state of great contrasts, from the huge, flat expanse of irrigated vineyards in the Riverina area near Griffith to the high uplands of Mudgee in the north. The Hunter Valley is the most recognised region within NSW, famous for its long-lived Semillons and unique styled Shiraz. Riverina is the largest wine-producing region. The more recent viticultural developments are within the regions along the Great Dividing Range: Mudgee, Orange, Cowra, Hilltops etc. There is much promise and interest in the wines now being produced within these regions.

Merlot

The other main grape in Bordeaux, used for blending with Cabernet Sauvignon. This grape produces wines with soft, rich and velvety texture, with very ripe fruit flavour that are low in tannins.
