Yalumba Steeple Shiraz
The 2015 single site Shiraz is sourced from the Yalumba Steeple vineyard. This old block of Shiraz was planted in 1919, on its own roots, close to the Light Pass township on the floor of the Barossa Valley. The soil is well drained and consists of a marked contrast in texture between the surface soil and the subsoil.
WINEMAKING
Wild yeasts initiate fermentation, contributing to the individual complexities of the wine, creating richness and fine textures. The skins were plunged regularly to extract colour, tannin and flavour. Once fermentation was complete, the wine was matured in Tonnellerie Sylvain barriques. These unique barriques are coopered specifically from a 360 year old tree from the Troncais forest of France.
VINTAGE CONDITIONS
The growing season began with consistent winter rainfall. Spring remained warmer and drier than average and the vines were off to a healthy start. Smaller bunch and berry sizes have produced grapes of great aromatics and flavour. It was a long and relatively
mild summer, with very few heat spikes and quite cool nights. These cool nights helped to retain the acidity and pristine fruit flavours we seek in our Shiraz wines.
TASTING NOTES
Yalumba Steeple Vineyard Shiraz is a true single vineyard wine that continually showcases its Barossa provenance. The wine reflects the generosity and style of the 2015 vintage, with attractive perfumed aromas of anise and sweet blueberry. Packed with raspberry, cranberry and violet flavours, this is a stylish and enticing wine, with silken smooth texture. Enjoy with slow cooked black Angus beef cheeks, smoked chestnut puree and roasted cabbage or Cajun style tofu with caramelised root vegetables.

“Founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family owned winery. Today, the winery is owned by fifth generation descendants, Robert & Sam Hill Smith and their families.
Yalumba is determined to create wines with genuine regional character, varietal flavour and individual personality; wines that say remarkable things about some of the world’s most remarkable wine regions.”
The Barossa Valley is one of the major regions in Australia, where many of the major wine companies are based. It is believed the first vineyards were planted in the 1840s by Silesian migrants (who settled in Bethany). There followed a rapid expansion of plantations. The early styles of wines produced were heavy dry red wines and fortified wines that were popular both domestically and in Britain. After the Second World War the styles shifted to lighter table wines with production of Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The Barossa Valley is home to some very well known names such as Seppelt, Wolf Blass and Penfolds as well as many smaller producers. The climate is Mediterranean with hot dry summers and cool wet winters, making it ideal for viticulture. The main wine styles: White – Semillon, Riesling, Chardonnay, Semillon-Chardonnay blend; Red – Shiraz (full bodied & ripe) with Old Vine Shiraz a speciality of many vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Shiraz-Grenache-Mataro blend, Cabernet-Merlot blend.
flourish in a range of climates. In the warm to hot climates you can expect extremely intense aromatic, rich, full bodied wines, with hugh fruit (almost sweet) and chocolately tasting. In the more moderate/cooler climates you’re more likely to find structured Shiraz wines with black cherry, pepper and spice characters rather than the chocolate and fruit styles found in warmer climates.
