Australia is a leading light in the supposed “new world” of wines”. It leads in the adoption of new techniques and practices, and as it is often a difficult place to farm it looks closely at developments which are focused on sustainability and environmental issues. Because the use or not of finings is a key element in winemaking, it follows that significant numbers of Australian wineries are making vegan friendly wines, and more will follow in the future.

Sustainability

Sustainability is now a huge movement across the whole Australian wine industry. Minimal footprints, carbon neutrality and bio dynamics have all been real drivers in the industry as it takes on the challenges of the 21st Century.

The industry has its own programme “Sustainable Winegrowing Australia” which is Australia’s national program for grape growers and winemakers to demonstrate and continuously improve their sustainability in the vineyard and winery through the environmental, social and economic aspects of their businesses. Organic and Biodynamic

Sustainability leads often leads on to working either organically or biodynamically.

There are broadly three ways you can grow grapes and make wine: conventional, organic and biodynamic – or a combination of these. In Australia, organic wines are made from grapes that have been grown organically – that is, without the use of synthetic fertilisers, herbicides, insecticides or fungicides. It’s an environmentally friendly way of producing grapes that’s all about keeping a natural balance in the vineyard and the surrounding area.

Biodynamics goes a step further than organics and is all about nurturing the soil and treating the vineyard as one big living organism. It’s based on the ideas of scientist and philosopher Rudolf Steiner and follows the lunar cycle, which guides the timing of things like pruning and harvesting. Biodynamic producers also use ‘preparations’ made from manure, fermented herbs and minerals. Studies show that biodynamic soils are the most diverse in microflora and fauna. atural balance in the vineyard and the surrounding area.

Organic and Biodynamic wines are not necessarily Vegan. They may be, but it is not essential for their appropriate certification. However, wineries which follow these methods find they often lead them into the next stage, the production of vegan wine.

According to Wikipedia “The production of wine is a delicate process that includes a range of factors to obtain the desired outcome. One step in the production of wine often includes a process called fining. The fining process requires a fining agent to be suspended into the vat where it will later be filtered out of the wine. Fining agents are typically either animal, carbon or clay-based products and are used to gather proteins or sediment within the wine to adjust impurities such as colour, haziness, taste and/ or smell. Animal-based fining agents include gelatine, isinglass, egg whites, and casein. Different agents will be used based on the desired outcome of the wine and the winemaker’s preference. Because the fining agent is filtered back out of the wine, the labelling of these additives is not required or regulated in most places”.

Not all vegan wine is labelled, therefore it is often impossible to decide if it is vegan or not. Good wineries will label accordingly, and a winery not labelling correctly is missing a significant trick.

Australia produces a very significant number of vegan wines, red, white, and sparkling. It is a recent trend, so that care needs to be taken as some past vintages of current vegan wine may not be vegan as the winery may only recently have adopted the practice.

All new vintages of Yalumba wines are now vegan. Achieving 100% vegan-friendly wine status came from the desire to make more expressive and delicious wines. They want their wines to represent quality while expressing the natural terroir in which they are grown. The decision to move away from using animal products such as gelatine, milk, and eggs in the making of their wines was initially made to avoid their tendency to strip away the delectable fruit flavours and textures they work so hard to gain.
