The Black Shiraz

The Black Shiraz

Densely hued, this is a rich and fleshy Shiraz with generous minty blackberry, chocolate and mint flavours over hints of fresh herbs.

The Winemakers Reserve Black Shiraz is a densely hued, rich and fleshy Shiraz with generous aromas of blackberry and plum over toasty coffee and spicy oak. Full flavoured and intense, with rich plum, blueberry and mocha notes and ripe tannins imparting great structure and length.

Vintage
The 2022 vintage proved to be a standout with mild summer conditions along with idyllic rainfall. The extended ripening period produced wines with optimal acid and fruit flavour. The fruit was harvested in mid-March.
Vineyard
Predominantly sourced from the vineyards in Padthaway, South Australia, where the soils are sandy loam over clay, formed on old lagoon sediments. These sandy soils lead to poor nutrient and water retention which helps to concentrate the flavours in the fruit. The vines are grown on single wire trellises, ensuring an open canopy. Drip irrigation is used in the vineyards to manage the water supply and reduce evaporation, as water is applied directly above the roots. The fruit was harvested during the cooler nights to retain freshness.
Winemaking
The parcels of fruit were fermented in stainless steel vertical fermenters for four to six days at temperatures maintained between 26 to 30°C. Wine was then bag pressed at 1° Baumé and left to ferment until dry. It was then racked onto French oak for malolactic conversion, before being clarified via centrifuge into stainless steel storage. 25% of the blend was transferred to used French and American oak barrels for approximately four months’ maturation. Once all parcels were completed, the final cuvée was carefully blended and prepared for bottling.

Established by Bob & Cherie Berton in May 1996 with 75 acres of land at 450m above sea level on gently rolling hills in a sub-region of Eden Valley in South Australia. The Reserve Shiraz and Reserve Chardonnay wines are still sourced from this plot. In 2007 Bob purchased the Yenda winery in the heart of the Riverina. This state of the art facility allows Berton Vineyards to produce value for money wines which sit alongside his premium single vineyard offerings.

Berton Vineyards all started at our Eden Valley Vineyard, in High Eden, South Australia. High Eden is a subregion of Eden Valley, situated in the Barossa Valley. It is the highest part of the Barossa, about 500 meters above sea level. In this beautiful part of the world we have planted Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The best parcels of fruit from our Shiraz vineyards go into our Berton Vineyards Bonsai Shiraz, our flagship wine. Fruit from the Shiraz vineyard also forms the backbone for our Reserve Shiraz, which won the Decanter Platinum Best Value Rhone varietal in 2017. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc make our High Eden Range, and the Chardonnay goes into the White Rock Chardonnay and our Reserve Eden Valley Chardonnay.

Berton Vineyards

The Berton Vineyards story began 25 years ago from humble beginnings.

We are still young enough to be awed by tradition but we also challenge ourselves by testing the boundaries of winemaking.

We pride ourselves on being a contemporary winery with an emphasis on all that is casual, friendly and approachable in wine. Our philosophy is to make affordable, easy drinking wines of quality achieved through pairing modern technology with traditional techniques.

Testament to our philosophy are our award winning wines such as our High Eden Bonsai Shiraz, Reserve Botrytis Semillon and Metal Label range.

South Australia

The Eden Valley is between 400 and 600 metres in the Barossa Range, part of the Mount Lofty Range. It shares it historical roots with the Barossa Valley. Yalumba has substantial vineyard holdings, and a winery at Angaston, the site of the first vines planted by founder Samuel Smith in 1849. The cool climate provides ideal conditions for the production of high quality Riesling, Chardonnay and Shiraz wine.

Shiraz

flourish in a range of climates. In the warm to hot climates you can expect extremely intense aromatic, rich, full bodied wines, with hugh fruit (almost sweet) and chocolately tasting. In the more moderate/cooler climates you’re more likely to find structured Shiraz wines with black cherry, pepper and spice characters rather than the chocolate and fruit styles found in warmer climates.
