Simon Hackett Brightview Chardonnay
Dry medium bodied white wine, full and rich in colour with distinct peach and melon notes, complemented by subtle oak and a mineral palate.
Viticulture
Brightview Chardonnay is a blend of grapes from two different regions, Cowra and Padthaway, over 900kms apart. Harvest timing was carefully
determined by flavour development, sugar and acid levels and took place in the cool of the night.
Vinification
Fruit was destemmed and chilled to a bag press where it underwent a gentle press cycle and the free run juice was separated for each parcel.
The resultant juice was lightly clarified before undergoing a slow fermentation at cool temperatures of 14- 16ºC using carefully selected
yeast in optimising varietal expression. Prior to blending and bottling the wines underwent an extended period of 3 months on yeast lees and time in
premium French oak puncheons.
Recommendation
A delicious accompaniment to rich and creamy chicken or pasta dishes.

Simon Hackett was born and raised in the Barossa Valley where his family have been connected with the wine trade for many generations. His great uncle attended Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1860 and later his father graduated from the inaugural Oenology course from the same college in 1938. Today Simon’s winery is situated at the entrance to the McLaren Vale in Budgen Road and it is here that he hand crafts his wines in small open top fermenters, gently nurturing them in a combination of French and American oak barriques. Simon has never been afraid to tackle less common varietals and much of his fruit is sourced from dry grown vineyards with ancient gnarled old vines. His refreshingly citrus Semillon is a real eye opener whilst his Old Vine Grenache is one of the most delicious we’ve ever tasted, although obviously we are biased! Yields are often very small and his entire annual production rarely exceeds ten thousand cases.
Cowra is predominately linked with the production of Chardonnay. The modern viticulture history of this regions begins in the early 1970s when Allan Mitchell planted a small experimental vineyard on the banks of the Lachlan. But the region’s winemaking status was more recognised when in the late 1970s Brian Croser made his first Petaluma Chardonnays from Cowra grapes. It has only been recently that wine has been produced in the region; previously the grapes have transported to wineries outside of the region. The climate is regarded as hot. The main wine styles: White – Chardonnay.
Australia’s most widely planted white grape variety. The heavily oaked styles of the earlier nineties are now being replaced with styles emphasising the regional fruit and greater complexity. The cooler climate regions producing styles of great elegance and finesse.
