Mitolo Angela Shiraz, a premium wine from one of Australia’s most exciting wineries.
The Shiraz fruit for this wine is sourced from Sandra’s block, located about 5km south of Mitolo’s Chinese Block. The soil and geology of this block differ slightly with less black Biscay clay and more alluvial Christies Beach formation. This soil type contains rocky fragments that have been sheared off the nearby hills and deposited in this soil millions of years ago. This soil type is free draining, resulting in less vigour over spring and more content vines in the ripening period. This leads to a brighter wine style with signature Mitolo Shiraz softness.
Mitolo Angela Shiraz is deep, bright crimson. Blackberry bramble, plum, and cassis perfumes blend with subtle mint and dried herbs. This Angela Shiraz is a true reflection of vintage, with the low yields producing concentrated wine of a more savoury nature and great structure. Blackberry, olive tapenade, tar and cassis flavours are balanced with bright acidity and subtle vanillin from oak ageing.

“Mitolo, founded in 1999 (2000 was their first vintage) has in a very short space of time become one of Australia’s hottest wineries. It has been lauded by the press, with James Halliday saying that ‘Frank Mitolo has methodically covered every aspect of high-quality winemaking”¦’ and Huon Hooke commenting that the Mitolo wines ‘”¦are genuinely low-yield, majority old-vine, handmade wines of real concentration and opulence”¦to put it simply, the wines are great.’
Frank Mitolo’s partner is winemaker Ben Glaetzer, who was recently awarded the 2004 Qantas Medal for Young Australian Winemaker of the Year. Ben is obsessed with quality. ‘We pick all the grapes into small bins, pick on flavour rather than analysis and use about 80% French oak.’”
The McLaren Vale is predominately a red wine region, producing some of the best red wines in South Australia. Vineyards were first planted in the mid 1800s. One of the early pioneers Thomas Hardy established a business that evolved to BRL Hardy, one of the largest wine companies in the country. The region also has a healthy number of boutique wineries that consistently make fine wines and experiment with different wine styles. The climate is warm to hot with dry summers, and benefits from cooling breezes from the St Vincent Gulf. The main wine styles: Red – Shiraz (rich, ripe & generous), Cabernet Sauvignon; White – Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc.
flourish in a range of climates. In the warm to hot climates you can expect extremely intense aromatic, rich, full bodied wines, with hugh fruit (almost sweet) and chocolately tasting. In the more moderate/cooler climates you’re more likely to find structured Shiraz wines with black cherry, pepper and spice characters rather than the chocolate and fruit styles found in warmer climates.
