John Duval Entity
My aim with Entity is to produce an elegant Shiraz true to the Barossa. Entity includes 40% Eden Valley Shiraz to help maintain the elegance and style of Entity. Traditional, low intervention winemaking techniques were employed with Entity, allowing the wine to be approachable in its youth, but with ample structure and fruit depth to allow cellaring, under good conditions, for at least 10- 12 years.
VINTAGE: The growing season was characterised by low winter and spring rainfall, which was followed by a hot spell in mid-December. The hot conditions were thankfully broken by almost 40 mm of rain in late January. The timing of this rain was perfect, particularly for our dry grown vines. The balance of the ripening season comprised warm days, but slightly cooler than average night temperatures, helping the vines to cope with the warm conditions. Shiraz was first picked in the Krondorf area on 9 February and finished on 10 March in Eden Valley. While yields were around average quality was very high.
TASTING: Colour: Deep purple red.
Nose: Lifted notes of violets, dark berries and plum, enhanced by cedary-spicy French oak.
Palate: Full bodied and tightly packed with an array of concentrated dark fruits. Succulent, balanced and long on the palate.
REGION: Barossa
VARIETIES: Shiraz 100%, sourced from old vineyards in the Krondorf, Ebenezer, Moppa, Light Pass and Eden Valley regions (comprising 60% Barossa Valley, 40% Eden Valley fruit).
WINEMAKING: Fermentation with submerged cap and small open top stainless-steel fermenters
OAK MATURATION: 100% barrel matured for 15 months, with 33% new fine grain French oak hogsheads (300 litres) and the balance in 2, 3 and 4 year old hogsheads
TECHNICAL NOTES: Alcohol 14.5%
pH 3.57

“John Duval started work at Penfolds in 1974, and worked with the legendary Max Schubert and Don Ditter in the formative years of his career. He took over from Don Ditter as chief winemaker in 1986,a post he held until November, 2002. As chief winemaker, he was responsible for the production of Grange and the other legendary red wines from Penfolds. He was twice named Red Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge.
The 2003 vintage was the first vintage of his own label, made with fruit sourced from some long-time friends in the Barossa. “
The Barossa Valley is one of the major regions in Australia, where many of the major wine companies are based. It is believed the first vineyards were planted in the 1840s by Silesian migrants (who settled in Bethany). There followed a rapid expansion of plantations. The early styles of wines produced were heavy dry red wines and fortified wines that were popular both domestically and in Britain. After the Second World War the styles shifted to lighter table wines with production of Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The Barossa Valley is home to some very well known names such as Seppelt, Wolf Blass and Penfolds as well as many smaller producers. The climate is Mediterranean with hot dry summers and cool wet winters, making it ideal for viticulture. The main wine styles: White – Semillon, Riesling, Chardonnay, Semillon-Chardonnay blend; Red – Shiraz (full bodied & ripe) with Old Vine Shiraz a speciality of many vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Shiraz-Grenache-Mataro blend, Cabernet-Merlot blend.
flourish in a range of climates. In the warm to hot climates you can expect extremely intense aromatic, rich, full bodied wines, with hugh fruit (almost sweet) and chocolately tasting. In the more moderate/cooler climates you’re more likely to find structured Shiraz wines with black cherry, pepper and spice characters rather than the chocolate and fruit styles found in warmer climates.
