Geoff Merrill G&W Cabernet Sauvignon

G & W Cabernet Sauvignon THE NAME
“Sourced from our company owned vineyards, “G” is for Graymoor in the Coonawarra and “W” for Wickham Park in McLaren Vale. The individual growing conditions of each site affords us the unique opportunity of being able to blend wines of what each region has to offer.” – Geoff Merrill

VINTAGE INFORMATION More vigorous canopy growth during bud development in 2011, ensured fewer bunches per vine and lighter bunch weights for the 2012 vintage effectively dropping yield rates 35 – 50%. Immediately following the high temperatures was some cool weather and a rain event which slowed down ripening and allowed the vintage to progress at a good rate. Overall 2012 was considered to be an outstanding vintage.

WINEMAKERS NOTES The colour is a very deep dark red. The aroma is characterised by ripe, concentrated berries, spice and herbs. Olive, plum, currant, menthol and chocolate just for starters. Then earth, sage and a little vanilla bean pokes out between the toasty oak. Not your typical cabernet, this is a ripe, inky, muscular specimen that eats rump steak for breakfast. The palate has great length and acidity with firm, grippy tannins and ample fruit weight bringing it all together.

“Drink now through to 2025 with your favourite steak, grilled lamb or moussaka.”

Geoff Merrill Wines

In 1980, Geoff Merrill and business partner Trevor Stratton established Stratmer Vineyards, parent company of Geoff Merrill, Owens Estate and Mount Hurtle Wines. In the early years, Geoff Merrill wines were crafted at various locations across the South Australian wine regions, including Chateau Reynella and Pirramimma in McLaren Vale, and Peter Lehmann Wines in the Barossa Valley. A modern processing plant was established at McLaren Flat in 1984 in a joint venture with fellow winemaker, Goe DiFabio, which centralised the production of Geoff Merrill wines and allowed greater control over the winemaking process.
Trevor Stratton eventually sold his share of Stratmer Vineyards in 1992 to Alister Purbrick of Chateau Tahbilk, who remained a 50% partner until 2005. Geoff is now the sole owner of the company and continues to develop and produce exceptional wines.

South Australia

Coonawarra is considered the most renowned wine region in Australia. It has the ‘terra rossa’ soils and some great winemakers, and subsequently responsible for some of the best wines produced in Australia. Most notably red wines and Cabernet Sauvignon in particular. The first vineyard was planted in the 1880s at Yallum, (John Riddoch’s). The region did not establish its reputation as a winemaking area until the 1950s when Wynns and Penfolds purchased acreage on the back of a resurgence in the table wine market. Investment by large and small companies led to expansion, securing Coonawarrra’s status as a great wine. The climate is regarded as Mediterranean. The main wine styles: Red – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet-Merlot blend, Shiraz; White – Chardonnay.
