Cullen Red Moon Blend

Cullen Red Moon Blend

Cullen Red Moon Blend – Dense brick red with purple tinges. Lively fresh plum, rose and violet aromas are backed by a touch of vanilla. Rich plum, cherry and peppery spice flavours on the mid palate with soft tannins. A delicious and pure fruit-driven wine.

A Red Moon occurs during a total lunar eclipse when the light filtering through the Earth’s atmosphere dapples the moon in red light. A penumbral lunar eclipse occurred on the 11th of February 2017 during harvest. Fruit from the Mangan Vineyard was hand harvested, fermented naturally and basket pressed to French oak. This is the origin of the Cullen Red Moon Blend.
Cullen Wines have been very successful in meeting their aim of producing a wine which, while fruit driven, is of such high quality that it will develop for several years under good cellaring conditions.
This wine was made from a carefully selected blend of Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot grown on the Mangan Vineyard, which has been shown to be ideally suited to nurturing these grape varieties.

Cullen follows the maxim that states that great wines are made in the vineyard. Thus, prior to planting, extreme care is taken in choosing the best possible site. Fruit for all Cullen Wines is sourced exclusively from two vineyards, the Cullen Estate Vineyard and the Cullen Mangan Vineyard, both certified A Grade Biodynamic by the Biological Farmers Association (BFA) of Australia.

Cullen Wines

One of Australia’s best small wineries. In 2000 winemaker Vanya Cullen became the Qantas/The Wine Magazine Winemaker of the year. She was the third recipient of this prize, the first Western Australian and the first woman to win the award. Vanya is the daughter of Di & Kevin Cullen, who were the first to plant a commercial vineyard in Margaret River (1966).

Western Australia

Regarded as one of Australia’s best wine producing regions. It is synonymous with a new era in Australian wine. Margaret River really began its vineyard life as a result of two research reports from Californian viticulturalist Professor Harold Olmo and the Western Australian scientist Dr John Gladstone. In 1965 Dr Gladstone’s report indicated that the region had all the attributes to produce world quality wines. This advise was acted on by Dr Tom Cullity who set up his Vasse Felix vineyard near Willyabrup, followed by Dr Kevin Cullen and his wife Di who set up Cullen Wines. The climate is regarded as ‘cool’ because of its long slow ripening season. This region is regarded along with Coonawarra and the Yarra Valley as one of the premium Cabernet Sauvignon areas in Australia. The main wine styles: Red – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet-Merlot, Shiraz; White – Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho.
