Cullen Wines Diana Madeline

Cullen Wines Diana Madeline – Perhaps Cullen’s best-known wine, this blend was recently included in the prestigious Langton Classification of Australian Wines. This wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The result is a deeply coloured wine with great depth of flavour, fine grain tannins and outstanding cellaring potential.

Garnet in colour with youthful ruby-purple hues. Deeply perfumed on the nose with sumptuous aromas of mulberry, rich cherry, chocolate, wild rose and violet. Both light and intense on the
palate, with a juicy fruit core of mulberry, plum and cherry. This unctuous fruit is framed by beautiful fine grained tannins and Wilyabrup earth and ironstone characters which express the
warmth of the vintage and complements the concentration of the fruit.

The 2020 vintage was defined by dry conditions from the onset of budburst through to harvest. Lower than average rainfall in 2019 paired with hot and dry weather in January, February and March made for almost drought-like conditions. Harvest took place from 8th February until 10th March. Bunch numbers were about average, but low berry weights produced very low yields. The resulting wines were balanced with excellent fruit purity, a vintage similar to 2003 in style.

All Cullen Wines are grown on a certified Biodynamic, Carbon Neutral and naturally powered estate. Grapes are harvested by hand on fruit and flower days according to the astrological calendar. The wines have no additions of yeast, acid or malolactic culture, and are in this sense natural wines which express the place and land on which they are grown, the vintage and the people.

Red wine quality is defined to a large extent by the ripeness of tannin. The wine style is framed around these fine grained tannins coaxed from grapes grown on low yielding vines. This is the theme for all Cullen red wines and gives finesse, flavour and longevity.

Cullen Wines

Cullen Wines

One of Australia’s best small wineries. In 2000 winemaker Vanya Cullen became the Qantas/The Wine Magazine Winemaker of the year. She was the third recipient of this prize, the first Western Australian and the first woman to win the award. Vanya is the daughter of Di & Kevin Cullen, who were the first to plant a commercial vineyard in Margaret River (1966).

Western Australia

Margaret River Wine

Regarded as one of Australia’s best wine producing regions. It is synonymous with a new era in Australian wine. Margaret River Wine really began its vineyard life as a result of two research reports from Californian viticulturalist Professor Harold Olmo and the Western Australian scientist Dr John Gladstone. In 1965 Dr Gladstone’s report indicated that the region had all the attributes to produce world quality wines. This advise was acted on by Dr Tom Cullity who set up his Vasse Felix vineyard near Willyabrup, followed by Dr Kevin Cullen and his wife Di who set up Cullen Wines. The climate is regarded as ‘cool’ because of its long slow ripening season. This region is regarded along with Coonawarra and the Yarra Valley as one of the premium Cabernet Sauvignon areas in Australia. The main wine styles: Red – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet-Merlot, Shiraz; White – Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho.
