The Galvo Garage

The Galvo Garage

The Galvo Garage by d’Arenberg, a Cabernet blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc

‘Garage wines’ is a term used to describe wines that are produced in the back sheds of Bordeaux winemakers, who make small batch wines of the highest quality. Our galvanized, corrugated ‘garage’ was built in 1927 and still houses the traditional equipment used in the handcrafting of this wine.

The wine’s appearance is noticeably deep and dark, suggesting a complex, full-bodied, oak matured wine. The nose displays a classic mix of aromas customary to the four Bordeaux varieties blended together. Notes of exotic dark plums, mulberry, blackcurrants, fragrant cassis and an underlying mix of dark chocolate, cherries, cured meats and spiced violets. Green runner-bean and fine-toasted, French oak, cedar notes come through as the wine opens. The palate displays ripe fruits but at the same time has an impressive elegance upon entry, and then you are struck with the overwhelming complexity and presence. Extremely juicy with a wonderful deep richness and structure. A mix of pure fruit with edges of exotic notes, immense structure and length with mineral acidity and fine lacy tannins directing the fruit.

The trademark feature of the d’Arenberg wine brand is that it uses the conventional basket pressing method while producing red and white wines. Currently, it is the only winery in Australia to follow this method. The flagship wine from the stables of d’Arenberg is the Dead Arm Shiraz, made from the Shiraz grape varietal that has been infected with fungus.
All the vineyards from where grapes are sourced for this brand’s wines are classified as organic and biodynamic-certified. Low yields, strong root systems and retention of the soil’s natural quality are the main environment-friendly principles responsible for the natural acidity and concentrated flavours of the fruits grown here.

d'Arenberg

“d’Arenberg is an icon of the McLaren Vale, dating back to 1912. Chief winemaker Chester Osborn is the great-grandson of the founder, Joseph Rowe Osborn. Chester now oversees a stellar (and ever-expanding) range of strangely named and exquisitely crafted red and white wines.
The oldest of the d’Arenberg blocks were first planted in the 1880s with Shiraz, and still contribute to the wines today.”

South Australia

The McLaren Vale is predominately a red wine region, producing some of the best red wines in South Australia. Vineyards were first planted in the mid 1800s. One of the early pioneers Thomas Hardy established a business that evolved to BRL Hardy, one of the largest wine companies in the country. The region also has a healthy number of boutique wineries that consistently make fine wines and experiment with different wine styles. The climate is warm to hot with dry summers, and benefits from cooling breezes from the St Vincent Gulf. The main wine styles: Red – Shiraz (rich, ripe & generous), Cabernet Sauvignon; White – Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc.
