Stump Jump Cabernet Sauvignon

Stump Jump Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

d’Arenberg Stump Jump Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

The nose sings of Cabernet Sauvignon. Sweet cr.me de cassis and mulberry, aromatic violets with a twist of blackcurrant leaf, if you were in any doubt as to the wines varietal provenance. The 2011 shows beautifully elegant on the palate but still offers plenty of dark, sweet fruits. The mint and leafy notes work as a nice counter point to the more luscious mulberry fruit. The cedary notes and fine grained tannin draw the wine to a long and focused finish. Primary, balanced and vibrant in youth, this wine is as appealing now as it will no doubt be in 3-5 years.

It is rumoured that the inventor of the Stump Jump plough, which enabled a ploughshare to jump over tree roots, had poor eyesight and required regular tests to ensure he could still operate machinery. The design of this label is inspired by an optometrist’s eyechart and serves as a makeshift sobriety test. If you can hold the bottle at arm’s length and still read the front label, you can enjoy another glass.

The nose and palate are brimming with purple fruits of cassis, mulberry and violets along with subtle herbal notes of red capsicum and mint. There is a nice cedary edge to the wine adding savouriness and complexity. The mouthfeel is sleek and is structured with the purple fruits enveloped in a layer of fine, chalky tannins ensuring the flavours don’t overwhelm the palate with sweetness but rather taper into a long and rewarding finish.

The grapes used in this wine are mostly from very old bush vines, and underwent gentle crushing, traditional open tank fermentation, basket pressing and oak maturation prior to bottling.

A wine showing signs of both maturity and youth. Youthful, juicy, mulberry and blackcurrant notes are slowly turn to wonderfully mature and smooth flavours of sweet, juicy, baked fruits, fresh leather and woody spice. A lovely line of acid runs through the palate bringing freshness and life, combining with the slowly softening tannins to add focus and length. This wine will promises to continue drinking well for another two or three years, possible more with good cellaring conditions. More rewarding than its price would suggest. Enjoy!

Stump Jump Cabernet Sauvignon blend is an entry level product in the d’Arenberg wines, but still retains the quality of this premier winery.

d'Arenberg

“d’Arenberg is an icon of the McLaren Vale, dating back to 1912. Chief winemaker Chester Osborn is the great-grandson of the founder, Joseph Rowe Osborn. Chester now oversees a stellar (and ever-expanding) range of strangely named and exquisitely crafted red and white wines.
The oldest of the d’Arenberg blocks were first planted in the 1880s with Shiraz, and still contribute to the wines today.”

South Australia

The McLaren Vale is predominately a red wine region, producing some of the best red wines in South Australia. Vineyards were first planted in the mid 1800s. One of the early pioneers Thomas Hardy established a business that evolved to BRL Hardy, one of the largest wine companies in the country. The region also has a healthy number of boutique wineries that consistently make fine wines and experiment with different wine styles. The climate is warm to hot with dry summers, and benefits from cooling breezes from the St Vincent Gulf. The main wine styles: Red – Shiraz (rich, ripe & generous), Cabernet Sauvignon; White – Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Probably the world’s most famous red grape variety. Originated from Bordeaux and has been present in Australia since 1832.

Wherever it has been planted the resulting wine has developed its own identity yet it is always recognisable. Although it will vary in intensity the aroma will always be dominated by berry characteristics in the classic wines and the tannins will be firm or textured and soften with age. Cabernet Sauvignon is high in acid and tannin and remains fresh for many years. It can be earthy and display strong blackcurrant flavours. The naturally high tannin and inherent complexity mean all Cabernet Sauvignons will improve with age.

Coonawarra, with its prized ‘terra rossa’ soils, Margaret River, Mount Barker (Great Southern) and Yarra Valley regions are considered the premium Cabernet Sauvignon areas in Australia.
