The Footbolt Shiraz by d’Arenberg named after the decision in 1912 by Joseph Osborn, who was a successful racehorse owner and Footbolt was the pride of his stable, to sell his horses to purchase the d’Arenberg property.
McLaren Vale through and through! Here is the epitome of great Shiraz from our world renowned region. This is a wine that seduces. The nose is loaded with black pepper and baking spices. Liquorice and aniseed aromas are lifted by bucketloads of red and black plummy berry fruit. It’s not just fruit and spice on the nose here though. This is a complex wine showing fresh mushroom and forest floor characters with subtle hints of aged oak and scented glimpses of seasoned leather and pipe tobacco. The seduction continues on the palate with a foreboding rush of dark fruit, blood orange, charcuterie, and peaty earth. All wrapped around a robust concentrated core of chewy, round tannin. This vibrant tannin line carries through to a long, spicy, mineral finish.
The Footbolt Shiraz is a wine any lover of Shiraz will happily be seduced by.

A consistently great McLaren Vale Shiraz. Generously rich with amazing fruit weight and balanced, chewy tanins. Brimming with ripe red fruits and an underlying layer of subtle oak, as well as a hint of pepper. This wine represents great value, and has a long life ahead of it… If you can resist!
White wines from this vintage are fruity and very flavoursome, as are reds with ample tannin to match.
Small batches of grapes are crushed gently and then transferred to five tonne headed down open fermenters. These batches remain separate until final blending. Foot treading is undertaken two thirds of the way through fermentation. The wine is then basket pressed and then transferred to a mixture of new and used French and American oak barriques to complete fermentation. The barrel ferments are aged on lees, and there is no racking until final blending. This wine does not undertake fining or filtration prior to bottling.

“d’Arenberg is an icon of the McLaren Vale, dating back to 1912. Chief winemaker Chester Osborn is the great-grandson of the founder, Joseph Rowe Osborn. Chester now oversees a stellar (and ever-expanding) range of strangely named and exquisitely crafted red and white wines.
The oldest of the d’Arenberg blocks were first planted in the 1880s with Shiraz, and still contribute to the wines today.”
The McLaren Vale is predominately a red wine region, producing some of the best red wines in South Australia. Vineyards were first planted in the mid 1800s. One of the early pioneers Thomas Hardy established a business that evolved to BRL Hardy, one of the largest wine companies in the country. The region also has a healthy number of boutique wineries that consistently make fine wines and experiment with different wine styles. The climate is warm to hot with dry summers, and benefits from cooling breezes from the St Vincent Gulf. The main wine styles: Red – Shiraz (rich, ripe & generous), Cabernet Sauvignon; White – Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc.
