d’Arenberg The Peppermint Paddock is a Sparkling Red Wine from d’Arenberg. It is a sparkling red-sec Chambourcin blend from McLaren Vale. An example of popular red wine from Australia, from a premium winemaker
The story behind the name comes from the original block of vines used to make it. Surrounded by peppermint gums, the block was replanted in 1989 to Chambourcin from Shiraz which had never grown well on that particular site. When the fruit is picked fully ripe it retains high levels of acidity, an abundance of colour, flavour and tannin – perfect for a sparkling red wine
A vibrant purple and persistent mousse, the bead lively; a wine that tickles the nose as it tantalizes the palate. The nose is a swirl of exotic spice, ripe plum and black olive, a heady mix that draws you back for another whiff of dark fruits and a hint of cedar.
The palate is full and fresh, slightly sweet, showing strong flavours of mint, black fruits and Christmas spice. The wine is balanced and concludes with persistent tannin and intertwined acidity.
Chambourcin is a complex hybrid red variety bred in 1945. It has high natural acidity which makes it suitable for sparkling wine. This wine is deep purple in colour with lashings of grape berry and sweet spice aromas. Full and fresh in the mouth, its crisp acidity is evident as are plenty of flavour and a clean finish. This is the wine to accompany the Christmas turkey and ham. Perfect red for a hot summer’s day and could easily handle a beef curry for that matter.
This is a non-vintage sparkling wine, indicating specific parcels are selected from a number of vintages to create a consistency in quality from one cuvee to the next.

“d’Arenberg is an icon of the McLaren Vale, dating back to 1912. Chief winemaker Chester Osborn is the great-grandson of the founder, Joseph Rowe Osborn. Chester now oversees a stellar (and ever-expanding) range of strangely named and exquisitely crafted red and white wines.
The oldest of the d’Arenberg blocks were first planted in the 1880s with Shiraz, and still contribute to the wines today.”
The McLaren Vale is predominately a red wine region, producing some of the best red wines in South Australia. Vineyards were first planted in the mid 1800s. One of the early pioneers Thomas Hardy established a business that evolved to BRL Hardy, one of the largest wine companies in the country. The region also has a healthy number of boutique wineries that consistently make fine wines and experiment with different wine styles. The climate is warm to hot with dry summers, and benefits from cooling breezes from the St Vincent Gulf. The main wine styles: Red – Shiraz (rich, ripe & generous), Cabernet Sauvignon; White – Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc.
A red grape which is more resistant than usual to fungal disease. A hybrid grape with some uncertain parentage usually associated with North America.
