After a couple of years not making a GSM, we are excited to bring this wine back in 2022! The blend is one which falls naturally together, with all the fruit this vintage coming from our Greenock Vineyard. Grenache, the base for this wine, has an ability to deliver sufficient power yet with an elegance and restraint on the palate which is quite unique.Grenache and Mataro were co-fermented in open cement vats to produce a vibrant and delicious backbone for our blend. We then chose a batch of Shiraz from Greenock to add a little mid palate weight without taking away the distinctly Grenache tone and lovely savoury line in this wine. The wines spent 7 months in seasoned French oak on lees before blending prior to bottling.

The vineyard was first planted on the banks of the North Para River in Nuriootpa in 1894 by early German settlers, the Scholz family. In 1916, it was purchased by Samuel Elderton Tolley who named the Estate ‘Elderton’. He built himself a sprawling homestead on the Estate and sold the fruit to his family’s winery. It was run successfully for many years, but became derelict in the early years of the vine pull (circa 1975).

Renowned internationally as one of the world’s greatest wine regions, the Barossa is home to almost 200 different wine companies; some of whom have been using the same vines for seven generations. The Barossa is home to the world’s oldest continually producing Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Semillon vines. Shiraz vines planted in 1847 by Johann Frederick August Fiedler are still in commercial production today!

When people think of Barossa wines, they’ll likely initially think of a Shiraz or a Riesling; two varietals the region is famous for. However, the diversity of conditions and soils available to winemakers in the Barossa allows for a vast variety of over forty different types of wine grapes to be grown in the region, each with its own personality and nuances.

“If you buy the house, I will give you the surrounding 72 acres of old vines for nothing”. This was the proposal offered to Lorraine and Neil Ashmead in 1980. The rambling old homestead looked ideal for a growing family and the Ashmead’s worked tirelessly to salvage and restore a phenomenal treasure of a vineyard.

South Australia

The Barossa Valley is one of the major regions in Australia, where many of the major wine companies are based. It is believed the first vineyards were planted in the 1840s by Silesian migrants (who settled in Bethany). There followed a rapid expansion of plantations. The early styles of wines produced were heavy dry red wines and fortified wines that were popular both domestically and in Britain. After the Second World War the styles shifted to lighter table wines with production of Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The Barossa Valley is home to some very well known names such as Seppelt, Wolf Blass and Penfolds as well as many smaller producers. The climate is Mediterranean with hot dry summers and cool wet winters, making it ideal for viticulture. The main wine styles: White – Semillon, Riesling, Chardonnay, Semillon-Chardonnay blend; Red – Shiraz (full bodied & ripe) with Old Vine Shiraz a speciality of many vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Shiraz-Grenache-Mataro blend, Cabernet-Merlot blend.
