The 2023 ripening season was far from normal in the Barossa, instead it was a vintage which rewarded diligence in the vineyard and time spent tasting grapes and trusting your instinct. On deciding it was time to pick our Chardonnay, we headed to Craneford to ground truth the plan and also check on the ripening of our two Riesling parcels thinking it might be a week or so away from harvest. However we walked through each parcel separately to arrive in the middle with this look of excitement at the flavour we were seeing, it was so exciting to taste right at that moment of flavour just arriving – we picked the following day. The fruit was in such pristine condition that we decided to take the free run which was fermented separately, one parcel giving a very floral terpene lift and the other a citrus note and seamless acid line. We also cut the pressings for ferment in some old oak. A portion of this has been added back to give a touch of roundness and sophistication to the palate, whilst being careful not to add any
phenolic profile to an otherwise pristine example of Eden Valley Riesling

The vineyard was first planted on the banks of the North Para River in Nuriootpa in 1894 by early German settlers, the Scholz family. In 1916, it was purchased by Samuel Elderton Tolley who named the Estate ‘Elderton’. He built himself a sprawling homestead on the Estate and sold the fruit to his family’s winery. It was run successfully for many years, but became derelict in the early years of the vine pull (circa 1975).

“If you buy the house, I will give you the surrounding 72 acres of old vines for nothing”. This was the proposal offered to Lorraine and Neil Ashmead in 1980. The rambling old homestead looked ideal for a growing family and the Ashmead’s worked tirelessly to salvage and restore a phenomenal treasure of a vineyard.

South Australia

The Eden Valley is between 400 and 600 metres in the Barossa Range, part of the Mount Lofty Range. It shares it historical roots with the Barossa Valley. Yalumba has substantial vineyard holdings, and a winery at Angaston, the site of the first vines planted by founder Samuel Smith in 1849. The cool climate provides ideal conditions for the production of high quality Riesling, Chardonnay and Shiraz wine.

Riesling

Possible one of the greatest white grape varieties in the world. It can make outstanding wines with power, flavour, elegance, and has the ability to age. The range of styles vary from the light and crisp to rich sweet desert wines.
