Yarra Valley Light Dry Red
56/44% pinot/syrah. Fermented separately with some whole bunches (for the syrah) and a short élevage in seasoned puncheons and barriques. A very bright crimson purple. Springs from the glass with violets, cherries, raspberries and a touch of Sichuan pepper. A juicy yet focused and delicious mouthful with satiny tannins. The bargain red wine in the portfolio.
2022 was a very small, high quality vintage in the Yarra Valley. The season was defined by a cool Spring, a mild growing season, cool nights and some conveniently spaced rain. The vineyards developed dark green healthy canopies with strong vine energy and good fruit set. This resulted in smaller crops with concentrated bunch flavour, vibrant colours and high natural acidity.
Sexton and Tarraford Vineyards

The Pinot Noir was destemmed and cold soaked for 4 days, and then fermented as whole berries. 3 months maturation in large old French oak barrels. No fining or filtration, bottled by gravity.

Giant Steps was founded by wine industry pioneer Phil Sexton, who ventured from Margaret River to Yarra Valley to find the ideal site to cultivate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of purity and finesse.
Phil found his holy grail near Gruyere in the Sexton vineyard, which he planted in 1997 on the steep slopes of the Warramate Ranges. A mad jazz fan, Phil named the winery after John Coltrane’s album and fitting metaphor “Giant Steps.”
In 2003, Winemaker Steve Flamsteed came aboard, and the two set about producing a range of iconic Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that express a profound sense of place from six finite sites in Yarra Valley.
Victoria is a small state in area, but home to possibly the largest number of wineries in Australia, most of them which are small family-run operations. Victoria’s diverse topography, combining numerous mountain ranges, like the Grampians and the Victorian Pyrenees throughout the centre; flat plains in the northeast; and hilly, ocean-cooled reaches in the Melbourne area, make its vineyards amongst the most scenic in Australia. An enormous range of wine styles are available, and virtually every varietal flourishes in some part of the state.
