Heartland Wine Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet has a very long history in Langhorne Creek and is one of the original red varietals that established the region. The 2016 vintage displays a classic cassis aroma with supportive savoury notes. A well balanced palate showing ripe dark fruits enhanced by a silky textural finish.
Heartland Wine Cabernet Sauvignon
Heartland is the place between the vines that offers the best view of the gum trees.
Heartland creates smooth wines from our vineyards in the cool climate growing region of Langhorne Creek. This is one of Australia’s most ideal climates for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and has the oldest recorded Cabernet vines in the world.
Winemaker: Ben Glaetzer Region: Langhorne Creek Soil: Sandy loam Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon
Tasting Notes: 2016 will be a small and fleeting vintage for Heartland, but I expect we will sing its praises for years to come. The Cabernet Sauvignon is at its elegant best and the surpassing length of flavor is matched by the mouthfeel and layers of aroma that precede it.
Vinification: The fruit was crushed into 8 tonne open fermenters and left on skins to cold macerate for three days prior to fermentation. Fermentation occurred at or under 23°C with our Rhône isolate yeast. This helped to extract the skin tannin while maintaining aromatics. The wine underwent its malolactic transformation in oak, was then racked and returned to French and American oak for a 12-month maturation. 2016 Vintage: Ben reckons this might be the finest vintage he has ever seen from Langhorne Creek. Only time will tell. Harvest was more generous than the previous few years, with above average quantity and quality. Total degree days were up from the last three years, with wonderful ripeness levels recorded leading to amazing fruit intensity. This may supersede the 2012 vintage for overall quality and has led to a very happy winemaker.

Heartland Wines – The Heartland story began in the late 1990’s when winemaker Ben Glaetzer became excited about the outstanding quality of fruit being grown in some of South Australia’s lesser-known regions, in particular Langhorne Creek.
Together with industry veterans, Scott Collett, Grant Tilbrook and more recently Nick Keukenmeester, they grew Heartland into an award-winning winery.
“A really important point I want to get across is we’re not a group of investors that have got together and poured cash into it for the sake of doing it. We are at the coalface of it.”
Today Heartland sources all of its fruit exclusively from Langhorne Creek and makes only red wines.
Langhorne Creek is a little known region with major importance, especially for the production of red wine. Fragrant Cabernet Sauvignon with its minty overtones is the most significant product of the region. Viticulture dates from the 1850s when Frank Potts established Bleasdale the region’s only winery to stay in continuous production. It was only in the 1990s that the major wine companies started setting up in the region. Its significance being the availability and certainty of irrigation water from the Murray-Darling system, providing the facility to grow grapes of very good quality at relatively low costs. It has a mild climate with little variation across the region. The main wine styles: Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz.
Probably the world’s most famous red grape variety. Originated from Bordeaux and has been present in Australia since 1832.
Wherever it has been planted the resulting wine has developed its own identity yet it is always recognisable. Although it will vary in intensity the aroma will always be dominated by berry characteristics in the classic wines and the tannins will be firm or textured and soften with age. Cabernet Sauvignon is high in acid and tannin and remains fresh for many years. It can be earthy and display strong blackcurrant flavours. The naturally high tannin and inherent complexity mean all Cabernet Sauvignons will improve with age.
Coonawarra, with its prized ‘terra rossa’ soils, Margaret River, Mount Barker (Great Southern) and Yarra Valley regions are considered the premium Cabernet Sauvignon areas in Australia.
