John Duval Plexus SGM

John Duval Plexus SGM

The solo project of John Duval, chief winemaker at Penfolds for years, and so the man who made Australia’s greatest red wine, Grange. For Plexus he relies on his in-depth knowledge of the Barossa to source only the finest grapes. His goal is to give a wide array of flavours from the Shiraz (52%), Grenache (32%), and Mourvédre (16%), together with structure, balance, and length.

Deep red colour with a tint of purple and quite a lot of oak to sniff, together with smoke, char, toast and a subtle trace of spice. The palate is medium to full-bodied and nicely smooth-textured, notwithstanding ample tannins. The style is savoury and drying, with a clean, extended finish.

Premium Australian red wine that’s ready to drink now, but will cellar well for 8-10 years.

John Duval is a legendary name. As only the third winemaker to be entrusted with the making of Australia’s most famous wine, Grange, John worked for Penfolds for 28 years (including 16 years as chief winemaker) until his departure in 2002.Despite his legendary status, John is a quiet, unassuming man who just happens to be one of the world’s great winemakers. He set out on his own with the 2003 vintage, sourcing fruit from some long-time friends in the Barossa. His Entity Shiraz and Plexus SGM have quickly established the reputation of John’s label with a Plexus white introduced in 2011.Plexus is a blend of the varieties that excel in the Barossa – Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre. The Shiraz, sourced from vineyards in the Stockwell, Light Pass and Krondorf regions, gives the wine lovely weight and depth. The Grenache is from 50 to 60 year old bush vines in Roland Flat, and gives the wine great aromatics along with softness and richness on the palate, while the Mourvedre, from old bush vines from the Light Pass and Krondorf regions (the oldest over a 100 years old) lends the wine a spicy character and good tannic structure. Entity is sourced from old Shiraz vineyards from the Stockwell, Light Pass, Ebenezer and Krondorf regions in the north and east of the Barossa Valley.

John Duval Plexus SGM – great wine from a legendary winemaker.

South Australia

The Barossa Valley is one of the major regions in Australia, where many of the major wine companies are based. It is believed the first vineyards were planted in the 1840s by Silesian migrants (who settled in Bethany). There followed a rapid expansion of plantations. The early styles of wines produced were heavy dry red wines and fortified wines that were popular both domestically and in Britain. After the Second World War the styles shifted to lighter table wines with production of Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The Barossa Valley is home to some very well known names such as Seppelt, Wolf Blass and Penfolds as well as many smaller producers. The climate is Mediterranean with hot dry summers and cool wet winters, making it ideal for viticulture. The main wine styles: White – Semillon, Riesling, Chardonnay, Semillon-Chardonnay blend; Red – Shiraz (full bodied & ripe) with Old Vine Shiraz a speciality of many vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Shiraz-Grenache-Mataro blend, Cabernet-Merlot blend.
