Mount Horrocks Clare Valley Semillon – Gleaming, very pale yellow. Lifted fragrant vanilla spice over apple and pear fruits, generous and appealing. Semillon’s lemon zest and herbal characters are held aloft by a deft touch of French oak barrel fermentation, delivering additional texture and spice notes, layered upon sprightly acidity. Flavoursome and stylish, rich and rounded yet not at all heavy, with fabulous length.

Just a few hundred metres to the north east of the estate riesling vineyard lies the Mount Horrocks planting of semillon. The soil is weaker; the profile rockier. Maintaining finesse in semillon is an art, starting with vineyard site selection (semillon can be heavy bearing in deeper soils). The grape bunches from this vineyard are small, especially in
a low-yielding season. Such was the case in 2018.
The result? A bright, lemony, intense and fresh wine; a hint of spice and creamy texture reflecting its time in French oak barriques. Stephanie believes this is “one of the best”.
Impressively light gold in colour.
Vibrantly fruited (and pale) for a barrel-aged white, displaying textured and layered lemon fruit and spicy oak, with a touch of creamy lees complexity. Great acid balance and impressive length of flavour – richness and depth without being the least bit over the top. Enjoy with or without food, and if with, something that allows the wine to shine such as grilled snapper.
Drink to 2029.
As no finings have been found necessary the wines are all suitable for vegans and vegetarians. Only the finest French oak barriques are used for those wines spending time in barrel.

Mt. Horrocks is as boutique as wineries come, with an annual production of only 5000 cases. In addition everything is hand picked and hand made. But this boutique approach is allied to a rigorous and technocratic approach in order to preserve the classic Clare Valley characters of the fruit.
Vineyards were first established in the mid 1800s. Some of the early winery names, Wendouree, Knappstein and Quelltaler are still in the region. Nowadays there is a mix of very large companies and a significant number of boutique wineries. The climate is regarded as warm, but there are variations due to altitude. The main wine styles: White – Riesling, Semillon, Chardonnay; Red – Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon.
