Noon Reserve Shiraz

Noon Reserve Shiraz

Noon Reserve Shiraz was produced in this year from fruit grown on the Main Road block in Langhorne Creek by the Borrett family. The Main Road block sits only a few hundred metres from the 20 Rows block and stood up to the cooler, wetter seasonal conditions better. It has produced a lovely big robust wine.

Medium plus deep in colour.

Lovely rich, sweet molasses aroma – very nice. Some meat stock too and also some floral perfume. Gorgeous.

Delivers a big mouthful of flavour. Very full bodied and generous wine. Beautifully ripe. Low acid, with quite a high level of firm but gentle tannin that balances the palate perfectly. Long, graceful finish. Really good.

Optimum drinking time: now through until 2032+

Grapes for the Reserve Shiraz have been sourced from the best block or blocks from the Borrett family vineyards in Langhorne Creek since the first Reserve Shiraz was produced in 1997.

The Noon Reserve Shiraz is a full bodied, generously flavoured wine. If you usually prefer white wines or more elegant, light-medium bodied reds then this may not be the wine for you. It may be drunk young but will certainly reward cellaring.

Note that there was no 2008, 2011 or 2023 Reserve Shiraz produced.

Earlier bottlings of this wine; 1993, 1992, 1991, 1990, 1989 and 1987 (when my father David was the winemaker) were labelled simply as Noon’s Traditional Red.

Shiraz loves the sun too and the Langhorne Creek blocks (which produce our Reserve Shiraz) are well located, with a higher clay content in the soil which is important for water holding and quality. The Shiraz blocks and the Cabernet blocks (which provide the grapes for our Reserve Cabernet) are situated in the area of the original plantings at Langhorne Creek known as the flood plain. This is a great example of man working with nature without imposing major changes on the natural environment.

Noon

Noon Winery is run and owned by Drew and Raegan Noon. The Noon’s are quiet and considered people making earth shattering wines! They make gloriously powered, ripe late-picked red wine styles. James Halliday once wrote that the Reserve Cabernet would be a good drink for a sumo wrestler!

The winery has a very small production most of which is pre-sold, and customers have long standing relationships with the winery and the family.

South Australia

Langhorne Creek is a little known region with major importance, especially for the production of red wine. Fragrant Cabernet Sauvignon with its minty overtones is the most significant product of the region. Viticulture dates from the 1850s when Frank Potts established Bleasdale the region’s only winery to stay in continuous production. It was only in the 1990s that the major wine companies started setting up in the region. Its significance being the availability and certainty of irrigation water from the Murray-Darling system, providing the facility to grow grapes of very good quality at relatively low costs. It has a mild climate with little variation across the region. The main wine styles: Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz.

Shiraz

flourish in a range of climates. In the warm to hot climates you can expect extremely intense aromatic, rich, full bodied wines, with hugh fruit (almost sweet) and chocolately tasting. In the more moderate/cooler climates you’re more likely to find structured Shiraz wines with black cherry, pepper and spice characters rather than the chocolate and fruit styles found in warmer climates.
