Yalumba has been developing its own sustainable viticulture program since the mid 1990s. This starts in the vineyard and extends to every aspect of winemaking, production, packaging and distribution. Many awards and milestones have resulted due to sustainability now being at our core. All Yalumba wines were announced vegetarian and vegan friendly as of 2011. Yalumba is the first wine company in the world to receive the Climate Protection Award from the US Environmental Protection Agency, 2007. These benefits are most obvious in your wine glass.

Yalumba runs an impressive environmental management programme, setting aside hundreds of hectares of land for conservation management. For every hectare of vineyard we own, we have at least one hectare of natural vegetation. We’ve planted thousands of trees over the past few decades.

Yalumba is also a signatory of the Australian Packaging Covenant (APC) – an initiative aiming to increase sustainable packaging; increase recycling; and reduce packaging litter. Yalumba is committed to reducing the environmental effects of packaging, whilst maintain packaging integrity

“Apart from economic viability and social equity, for us, sustainability is about biodiversity in our vineyards,” says Winemaker Louisa Rose. “To encourage it, we’ve done a number of things: we’ve reduced the amount of chemicals we use, incorporated an integrated pest management system, and encouraged biodiversity of vegetation in our vineyards”. All in the name of better winemaking.

Five generations and 170 years later Yalumba, Australia’s most historic family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, embodying all that has made the Australian wine success story the envy of winemakers the world over.

Y Series Unwooded Chardonnay

Y Series Unwooded Chardonnay

Y Series Unwooded Chardonnay

Y Series Unwooded Chardonnay is a refreshing, lip smacking Chardonnay. Nature does the work for us and guides this wine’s evolution. With minimal winemaker intervention and no oak influence, this Chardonnay is pure and fresh, with subtle complexity from the 100% wild yeast fermentation.

Light straw with green hues the Yalumba Y Series Unwooded Chardonnay has fresh aromas of pineapple, quince and paw paw with floral spices. A rich, yet mineral palate complemented by fresh tropical fruit that finishes with fresh grapefruit acidity.

The Y Series Chardonnay grapes were picked across the flavour spectrum, from lively citrus flavours such as lemons and limes to peach and tropical fruits. We picked in this way to ensure that when blended, the wine was balanced with flavour and natural acidity. Pressed straight to fermentation, the juice was managed using a “hands off” approach. Wild yeasts initiated and completed fermentation and once finished the wine was left on
lees to build complexity.

Pair with

Pan fried haloumi with lemon and parsley, or chickpea, zucchini and carrot fritters with a green mango salad

Producer Profile

In 1847 a 37-year-old brewer called Samuel Smith left his home in Wareham, Dorset with his wife Mary and their four children. Boarding a simple three-masted barque they left Plymouth and began the long and arduous journey to Australia, arriving in Port Adelaide. From there they trecked north to Angaston where Samuel took a job as a gardener. It was arguably this brave decision to start a new life in a remote and distant land, together with the hardship that they endured, that formed the strong sense of family unity that has been the bedrock of the family business ever since. In 1849 he started the wine farm that would grow over the next 5 generations to become one of Australia’s leading wineries, with a winemaking culture that is internationally recognised and respected. To embrace the native culture, Samuel decided to adopt a local name for his farm, calling it “Yalumba” meaning “all the country around’’ in the indigenous Peramangk language.

At Yalumba they believe that one good wine leads to another. The Y Series was created with that belief in mind. The Y Series represents a collection of iconic classics and exciting new varietals. Each authentically crafted with fruit from South Australia’s most celebrated wine regions. They hope that the glass of wine you hold in your hand right now marks the beginning of a delicious journey, and we look forward to sharing our love of wine as you explore the Y Series.

Yalumba is part of Australian wine alliance Australia’s First Families of Wine, a multimillion-dollar venture to help resurrect the fortunes of the $6 billion industry while highlighting the quality and diversity of Australian wine.

Yalumba Y Series Merlot

Yalumba Y Series Merlot

Yalumba Y Series Merlot

Yalumba Y Series Merlot is part of The Yalumba Y Series of quality wines salutes our proud history of viticulture and winemaking in South Australia.

Significantly, the individual icons on each label reflect the labours, inventive thinking and aspirations of all at Yalumba. The Merlot depicts a winery dog. It could be a Flash, a Nugget or an Archie type dog. With its wet nose, soft fur and dazzling, clear eyes, the dog is a reminder of loyal and long term relationships, a hallmark of the Yalumba culture.

The wine is deep crimson. It has an aroma of Cedar and blackcurrants which greet the drinker; together with  intense dark fruits with Indian style spices and cracked peppercorn.

Vintage Conditions

The summer months were warm with some rain events; these rains helped give the vines a great start and allowed them to access sub-soil moisture into summer. The wines from which Yalumba Y Series Merlot fruit is sourced were strong and healthy, producing grapes with focused flavour and excellent quality and structure. The grapes were fermented in static and rotary fermenters. Warm temperatures at the onset of fermentation and also three to five days post ferment maceration has helped extract soft fleshy tannins and build wine structure.

Palate

The palate shows briar and red fruits such as cherry and plum upfront and leads into a soft and velvety middle palate. This merlot is truly varietal and generous.

Enjoy with: Vegetarian korma.

Yalumba Y Series Riesling

Yalumba Y Series Riesling

Yalumba Y Series Riesling is part of the Yalumba Y Series of quality wines salutes our proud history of viticulture and winemaking in South Australia. Significantly, the individual icons on each label reflect the labours, inventive thinking and aspirations of all at Yalumba. The Riesling depicts the olive tree. It is said that where grapes thrive and prosper so too do the olive trees. When you consider the grape growing regions of South Australia, this adage is very true.

On The Palate

Great fruit weight and creaminess with overriding flavours of Meyer lemons and a moreish finish.

Aroma

Apple blossom, musk, orange sherbet and fresh cut pear.

Winemaking

The grapes were harvested in the cool of the night to help retain the lovely aromatics that Riesling is famous for. They were then crushed into a skin contact vessel for 45 minutes to increase flavour. The free run juice was then drained from the skins, with some light pressings to a tank for wild fermentation. After minimal winemaking intervention, the wine was stabilised and filtered, ready for bottling

Food Pairing

Yalumba Y Series Riesling is best enjoyed with Fritto misto

South Australia

South Australia is the largest wine producing state of Australia. It may be surprising to most that the Riverland region is the state’s largest grape producing area. The Barossa Valley is famed for its full-bodied, rich, ripe and generous reds. The Coonawarra is internationally renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon (and prized ‘terra rossa’ soils). Padthaway, McLaren Vale, and the Clare Valley all make major contributions, and the importance of the Adelaide Hills is rapidly increasing.
