Tahbilk Marsanne

Vintage 2022
The season started off slowly, summer was cool and the rainfall was low in the lead up.
A windy spring certainly disrupted the fruit set, leading to fewer berries per bunch with final yields well down, with some of our blocks by as much as 40%.
The harvest itself ticked along at a steady pace, whites progressed nicely, the reds ripening well and then everything ripened up at once with lots of juggling between whites, rose and red ferments.
With the low yields and challenges of this harvest there is much anticipation around the final release of our 2022 vintage Estate whites and reds.
And the final verdict on Vintage 2022? That will be yours …

Enjoy Now to 2028/2030
First planted on the Estate in the 1860’s, Tahbilk has the largest single holding of this unique varietal worldwide including surviving vines dating back to 1927,
that are among the oldest in the world.
The low-yielding and challenging 2022 vintage has delivered a true to Estate varietal Marsanne of lifted and intense lemon citrus, spice and pear fruits with a zesty minerality and cleansing acidity.
Time in the cellar will undoubtedly bring on a toasty, honeysuckle and orange marmalade richness and complexity.

“Tahbilk is undoubtedly the home of Marsanne, with the largest plantings in the world producing a wine that is second to none. The region is everything.
The 2022 Marsanne offers a natural acidity line that we only see in excellent years. The low yields meant exceptional fruit, resulting in a lovely style of wine.
This is a lovely spring wine, perfect in its youth but will reward to those who can offer it some time. Pairs well with seafood, a spring salad or a spicy Thai curry.”

Tahbilk

Tahbilk is the oldest family owned winery and vineyard in Victoria. Purchased by the Purbrick family is 1925, Tahbilk is now home to five generations.
The original 1860 winery and cellar door is like stepping into a hidden oasis, where the natural landscape blends to complement a rich winemaking heritage.
Tahbilk has a rich source of old vineyards and iconic single vineyard wines, including Victoria’s oldest Shiraz planted in 1860 and Australian’s oldest Marsanne planted in 1927.

Marsanne

“Although much-admired in the Rhône wines of southern France, Marsanne is a variety that only really received its fully due praise in Australia.
It is particularly good in the Goulburn and Yarra Valleys (Victoria). Basically, it’s like Chardonnay and Semillon but more so. More honeyed, more peachy, more spicy and there’s just a little more lemony acidity, too, which saves this grape from luscious overkill. As with its cousins from the Rhone, you won’t see too many of these wines around but if you spot a bottle, grab it, it’ll be worth trying.”
