Willunga 100 Tempranillo from Mclaren Vale – Aromatics of black cherry, sweet plum and hints of allspice are evident. The palate is a little more generous with blackberries, spice and an earthiness that gives the wine a savoury note. The tannins are persistent and promote great length, backed by a balanced acid structure. Will age beautifully.
Ideally suited to the Mediterranean climate of McLaren Vale, Tempranillo is a relative newcomer to the region. Long sunny days and ancient soils provide perfect conditions for concentrated wines with black cherries, sweet spice and a savoury finish.
Situated 45 minutes south of Adelaide, McLaren Vale is one of the most geologically diverse regions in the world. We play to our strengths, particularly with our single vineyard range, by utilising the different sites and soils found in the region to show diversity in our wines. Our vines enjoy a Mediterranean climate and sea breezes from the nearby Gulf of St Vincent.

Awards & Reviews:
93 points, 5 stars – Wine Orbit – Sam Kim – January 2018
”It is immediately appealing on the nose showing dark plum, blackcurrant, thyme, floral and cocoa aromas, leading to a succulent palate that displays rich fruit intensity and silky mouthfeel, wonderfully supported by fine, polished tannins. The wine is plump and fleshy and offers terrific drinking. At its best: now to 2024.”

Willunga 100 aims to produce unique and distinctive wines which capture the essence of the region. The grapes come from a range of selected vineyards in McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills (for the whites), including some over 50 years old. After only its first vintage in 2005, wine journalist and judge James Halliday gave the winery a Five Star rating in the 2008 Guide, and named it as one of his ‘Top Ten newcomers’. This vindicated the original aim of Willunga 100, which was to inject some quality and excitement back into Australian wine at this price. New vintages will be made by winemaker Tim James (ex Hardy’s and Wirra Wirra and a regular on the wine judging circuit) and continue to build on the quality of the range.
The McLaren Vale is predominately a red wine region, producing some of the best red wines in South Australia. Vineyards were first planted in the mid 1800s. One of the early pioneers Thomas Hardy established a business that evolved to BRL Hardy, one of the largest wine companies in the country. The region also has a healthy number of boutique wineries that consistently make fine wines and experiment with different wine styles. The climate is warm to hot with dry summers, and benefits from cooling breezes from the St Vincent Gulf. The main wine styles: Red – Shiraz (rich, ripe & generous), Cabernet Sauvignon; White – Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc.
