Willunga The One Hundred Grenache

Willunga The One Hundred Grenache

Willunga The One Hundred Grenache.

Wine Companion Magazine, April/May 2017 Issue

“Bright red in the glass, it has floral aromatics of a spring rose garden with spice and red fruit that jump out of the glass. The palate is luscious with a generosity of fruits, from strawberry to a hint of cinnamon, harnessed by fine, sandy tannins. It drinks perfectly with slow-roasted lamb shoulder. Enjoy from now until 2025.”

Tony Love, The Sun Herald, March 2018
4.5 Stars

“There are two single-vineyard iterations in this: Blewitt Springs and Clarendon, the former a celebration of the Vale’s sub region where cooler nights temper the more robust tendencies of Grenache and a unique fragrance develops, here with rose petal above native bush florals. Medium bodied, fine sandy tannins in the mouth feel are also a signature. But that fragrance – beautiful.”

The soils in McLaren Vale are among the oldest in the world, estimated at over 500 million years. The resulting low vigour and old vines combine to produce low yields in the vineyard and stunning, concentrated fruit.

The name is taken from the historic ‘Hundred’ (administrative area of 100 square miles) of Willunga that was established in 1839 – only three years after the settlement of South Australia – and today marks the land from which much of our fruit is sourced. The tree featured on our bottle label is an old River Red Gum, which stands tall over the vineyards and was already over one hundred years of age when the first vines were planted in McLaren Vale in the 1840s.

Before the first vintage in 2005, the team explored the McLaren Vale vineyards and came across plots of 50-year-old Grenache vines. At this time, most of the wine produced from this fruit was destined for blending as there was little demand for top quality Grenache. We decided this had to change, so they made these vines their focus and gave them the attention they deserved. They haven’t looked back since.

Willunga The One Hundred Grenache. – A great example of Aussie red wine from a winery which is passionate about Grenache.

Willunga 100

Willunga 100 aims to produce unique and distinctive wines which capture the essence of the region. The grapes come from a range of selected vineyards in McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills (for the whites), including some over 50 years old. After only its first vintage in 2005, wine journalist and judge James Halliday gave the winery a Five Star rating in the 2008 Guide, and named it as one of his ‘Top Ten newcomers’. This vindicated the original aim of Willunga 100, which was to inject some quality and excitement back into Australian wine at this price. New vintages will be made by winemaker Tim James (ex Hardy’s and Wirra Wirra and a regular on the wine judging circuit) and continue to build on the quality of the range.

South Australia

South Australia is the largest wine producing state of Australia. It may be surprising to most that the Riverland region is the state’s largest grape producing area. The Barossa Valley is famed for its full-bodied, rich, ripe and generous reds. The Coonawarra is internationally renowned for its Cabernet Sauvignon (and prized ‘terra rossa’ soils). Padthaway, McLaren Vale, and the Clare Valley all make major contributions, and the importance of the Adelaide Hills is rapidly increasing.

Grenache

Originates from Spain (known as Garnacha). This grape generally produces soft, velvety, high alcohol wines with sweet, ripe blackberry flavour. Old-vine versions are prized in South Australia.
