Yalumba Barossa GSM
A part of the Samuel’s Garden Collection from Yalumba – Yalumba’s Samuel’s Garden collection celebrates Yalumba’s direct lineage to Australia’s first vine plantings, some of which could be found in Samuel Smith’s garden 166 years ago. These wines demonstrate the diversity and quality of the Barossa region.
The GSM blend is a stalwart of the Barossa. The three red varieties have been planted in the region for nearly 170 years and in the past were commonly blended to make fortified “tawny port” style wines. After World War II the same blend started to become popular in table wines. ‘Grenache Shiraz Mataro’ is a bit of a mouthful – hence the birth of the colloquial ‘GSM’.
The three GSM varieties are picked separately for this wine and fermented in small batches – some in oak vats and some in stainless steel. The subsequent wine is aged in a mixture of large oak vats, small oak vats, puncheons and smaller oak barrels, to allow it to develop without the influence of a lot of oak flavour but to increase in textures and complexity.
Deep garnet in colour, this is a wine of many layers. It shows licorice, blackberry and plum, supported by notes of sandalwood and white pepper. A robust palate, full of chocolate and juicy Satsuma plum with a gravely tannin finish make it a great accompaniment to BBQ T-bone and seasoned wedges.

The Barossa Valley is one of the major regions in Australia, where many of the major wine companies are based. It is believed the first vineyards were planted in the 1840s by Silesian migrants (who settled in Bethany). There followed a rapid expansion of plantations. The early styles of wines produced were heavy dry red wines and fortified wines that were popular both domestically and in Britain. After the Second World War the styles shifted to lighter table wines with production of Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The Barossa Valley is home to some very well known names such as Seppelt, Wolf Blass and Penfolds as well as many smaller producers. The climate is Mediterranean with hot dry summers and cool wet winters, making it ideal for viticulture. The main wine styles: White – Semillon, Riesling, Chardonnay, Semillon-Chardonnay blend; Red – Shiraz (full bodied & ripe) with Old Vine Shiraz a speciality of many vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Shiraz-Grenache-Mataro blend, Cabernet-Merlot blend.
