The Cigar Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon from Yalumba
The Cigar; a name coined by Coonawarra Vignerons to describe the unique cigar-shaped strip of rich red terra rossa soil. Home to some of Australia’s most famous vineyards, the secret of Coonawarra lies in the intimate bond between the terra rossa soil, limestone layers, pure artisan water and a long cool ripening season. Fortunate to be part of this iconic place, Yalumba salutes the region’s pioneers and those privileged to inherit its future.
Yalumba has long had a mandate to craft exceptional quality wines that are accessible to wine lovers around the world. With this in mind, we set out to create younger siblings for two of our Rare & Fine stalwarts. Youthful interpretations of our beloved Rare & Fine wines that showcase the exceptional fruit to be found in their homes of the Barossa and Coonawarra, respectively. Thus Yalumba The Cigar Cabernet Sauvignon is born.
Yalumba ‘The Cigar’ is a wine from the Yalumba Coonawarra Estate. Sibling to ‘The Menzies’, this wine is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon harvested from The Menzies Estate vineyards. Named for the unique cigar-shaped strip of rich red terra rossa soil which defines Coonawarra’s wine region. Today, Coonawarra vineyard land is prized like a precious gem.
Yalumba The Cigar is made through traditional small lot winemaking techniques. The grapes are crushed to small static fermenters, ensuring good extraction of colour and tannin. The grapes stay on skins for around seven days, though some tanks are given extended skin contact before pressing. The wine is matured for 22 months in mainly French oak hogsheads and barriques; 28 per cent of them new.
The Cigar Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon from Yalumba has a full nose with intense savoury blackcurrant fruit and cherry ripe highlights. The wine’s palate shows a warmer vintage and opens with cassis and ripe cherries. There are layers of plum and cherry fruit entwined with middle weight tannins, giving a lengthy savoury textured finish.

“Founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family owned winery. Today, the winery is owned by fifth generation descendants, Robert & Sam Hill Smith and their families.
Yalumba is determined to create wines with genuine regional character, varietal flavour and individual personality; wines that say remarkable things about some of the world’s most remarkable wine regions.”
Coonawarra is considered the most renowned wine region in Australia. It has the ‘terra rossa’ soils and some great winemakers, and subsequently responsible for some of the best wines produced in Australia. Most notably red wines and Cabernet Sauvignon in particular. The first vineyard was planted in the 1880s at Yallum, (John Riddoch’s). The region did not establish its reputation as a winemaking area until the 1950s when Wynns and Penfolds purchased acreage on the back of a resurgence in the table wine market. Investment by large and small companies led to expansion, securing Coonawarrra’s status as a great wine. The climate is regarded as Mediterranean. The main wine styles: Red – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet-Merlot blend, Shiraz; White – Chardonnay.
