The Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon

The Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon

The Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon

Since its inaugural vintage in 1987, The Menzies, named after Sir Robert Menzies, politician and red wine enthusiast, has continued to grow in stature and quality. Cabernet Sauvignon grapes used for The Menzies are estate grown at Yalumba’s Coonawarra vineyard, an exceptional site in the heart of Coonawarra’s legendary terra rossa strip. Today, this premium Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon represents elegance of structure, finesse and longevity.

Dark cherry red with a crimson hue. The bouquet of the 2016 Menzies is elegant and inviting, notes of cedar and licorice combine beautifully with rich ripe cassis, violets and the quintessential Coonawarra “sea spray” note. The palate of the 2016 Menzies opens with a burst of cassis and mocha. It is a structural yet generous wine, dark and brooding with restraint and promise of the enjoyment for years to come. The fruit flavours are integrated and there is freshness and vitality.

Yalumba

“Founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family owned winery. Today, the winery is owned by fifth generation descendants, Robert & Sam Hill Smith and their families.
Yalumba is determined to create wines with genuine regional character, varietal flavour and individual personality; wines that say remarkable things about some of the world’s most remarkable wine regions.”

South Australia

Coonawarra is considered the most renowned wine region in Australia. It has the ‘terra rossa’ soils and some great winemakers, and subsequently responsible for some of the best wines produced in Australia. Most notably red wines and Cabernet Sauvignon in particular. The first vineyard was planted in the 1880s at Yallum, (John Riddoch’s). The region did not establish its reputation as a winemaking area until the 1950s when Wynns and Penfolds purchased acreage on the back of a resurgence in the table wine market. Investment by large and small companies led to expansion, securing Coonawarrra’s status as a great wine. The climate is regarded as Mediterranean. The main wine styles: Red – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet-Merlot blend, Shiraz; White – Chardonnay.
