Berton Reserve Botrytis Semillon

Berton Reserve Botrytis Semillon

Berton Reserve Botrytis Semillon

Luscious, honeyed flavours of peach and pineapple are well balanced by a refreshing, natural freshness.

Vintage
A dry start to the season continued right through to harvest in most regions which resulted in little to no disease issues in the vineyard. Early season temperatures were mild until January saw extreme heat waves for most of Riverina and supplementary water was crucial in maintaining vine health and crop protection. Despite the season’s challenges, the wine quality in 2019 is excellent.
Vineyard
The Griffith area is internationally renowned for producing some of the best Botrytis affected wines. The fruit is left on the vine for a significantly longer time than other Semillon to encourage the growth of Botrytis, which desiccates the skin allowing the moisture to evaporate. The berries are harvested at optimum maturity. The vine age is varied, but all vines have been spur pruned and are generally trained on a single wire cordon trellising system. The soil types in the vineyards are varied, with each adding its own characteristic to the resulting wine.
Winemaking
Harvested in early May, the sweet shrivelled fruit was left on skins overnight in a bag press to allow maximum flavour and sugar extraction before being pressed. The juice was then clarified and filtered before the start of fermentation. Fermentation lasted for four weeks and when half of the sugar had been converted to alcohol, fermentation was arrested by chilling to 3°C. Once clarified, the wine underwent 12 months oak maturation before being prepared for bottling.
Tasting Note
A luscious wine with intense and layered aromas of orange rind, apricot and honey. The vibrant palate delights with notes of apricot and almond biscotti which carry through to a beautifully balanced finish enhanced by toasted notes and subtle spice.

Established by Bob & Cherie Berton in May 1996 with 75 acres of land at 450m above sea level on gently rolling hills in a sub-region of Eden Valley in South Australia. The Reserve Shiraz and Reserve Chardonnay wines are still sourced from this plot. In 2007 Bob purchased the Yenda winery in the heart of the Riverina. This state of the art facility allows Berton Vineyards to produce value for money wines which sit alongside his premium single vineyard offerings.

Berton Vineyards all started at our Eden Valley Vineyard, in High Eden, South Australia. High Eden is a subregion of Eden Valley, situated in the Barossa Valley. It is the highest part of the Barossa, about 500 meters above sea level. In this beautiful part of the world we have planted Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The best parcels of fruit from our Shiraz vineyards go into our Berton Vineyards Bonsai Shiraz, our flagship wine. Fruit from the Shiraz vineyard also forms the backbone for our Reserve Shiraz, which won the Decanter Platinum Best Value Rhone varietal in 2017. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc make our High Eden Range, and the Chardonnay goes into the White Rock Chardonnay and our Reserve Eden Valley Chardonnay.

Trentham Estate is proud to announce its continued commitment to water conservation and wetland restoration, through a new partnership with the Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group Ltd.

Trentham Estate has long strived to provide support to localised Murray Darling research activities for sustainable water supply, quality and capacity. With the recent closure of the Lower Basin Laboratory in Mildura, it has looked to another respected organisation to support during a time of much strain on the local environment. For over 20 years, the Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group Ltd has worked on wetlands throughout the Murray-Darling Basin, restoring and improving the management of wetlands throughout the catchment, of the Murray-Darling Basin.

Trentham Estate’s River Retreat label, now vegan friendly, will proudly continue Trentham’s dedication to corporate responsibility – whereby every bottle purchased of River Retreat wine will result in a donation towards the Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group.

With many great projects currently underway in the far-west region of NSW, the Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group will benefit greatly from these ongoing funds.

“We are thrilled to be able to contribute to the restoration of our precious river system and we are confident that the Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group will make a real difference within the river region.” says winemaker Anthony Murphy.

Soldiers Block Shiraz

Soldiers Block Shiraz

Soldiers Block Shiraz – Delicate red fruit and herbal aromas open up to a palate of ripe mulberry and plum fruit. the fine grained tannin and vanilla from the oak, work in balance to deliver a wine of poise and elegance.

Soldiers Block Shiraz is sourced from ancient Victorian soils in order to achieve a wine with greater finesse, purity and structure as well as typical eucalypt flavours and saline finish associated with the area. Picked at night and crushed within an hour of picking before being sent to the fermentation tanks. The Shiraz grapes were fermented in temperature-controlled tanks maintained at 22 – 25ºC to avoid extracting any harsh tannins, with the fermentations pumped over to extract good colour. 20% of the final blend is barrel aged. The winemaker also added 5% Malbec at the end of the whole process – a sneaky technique that gives a mulberry fruit twist on the finish.

Bright, aromatic and juicy on the nose with just a touch of naughty bacon fat. True to the varietal, the tiny proportion of Malbec in this blend gives a flowery perfume. This vintage is our brightest, most dangerously drinkable Shiraz to date due to its fine, bright fruit and soft silky elegance.

Drink with Moroccan lamb tagine, roast vegetables and hard cheeses

Saddle Creek Shiraz Cabernet

Saddle Creek Shiraz Cabernet

Saddle Creek Shiraz Cabernet

Immensely popular blend of minty, plum and ripe red cherry characters enhanced by a juicy vanilla character.
Tasting Note
A juicy Australian red showing vibrant flavours of black fruits and vanilla. Soft and smooth with full-flavours of ripe fruits of the forest and a touch of oak spice.
Grape
Shiraz 61%, Cabernet Sauvignon 26%, Merlot 12%, Other Varieties 1%
Vineyard
The vine age is varied, but all vines have been spur pruned and are generally trained on a single wire cordon trellising system. The vines are planted at approximately 1.8 metres apart with 3.6 metres between the rows, to allow machinery access. The soil styles in the vineyards are varied, with each terroir adding its own characteristic to the final wine.
Winemaking
All grapes were machine harvested in order to retain the freshness. Fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks at 25 to 28°C to maximise colour extraction with French untoasted and toasted oak influence. When the ferment was 1° Baume it was pressed and left to ferment until dry. Malolactic conversion took place after it was racked onto French oak, which resulted in a softer mouthfeel. The wine was then transferred to a stainless steel tank, to retain the fruity characteristics until bottling.

Metal Label Classic Viognier by Berton Vineyards

Metal Label Classic Viognier by Berton Vineyards

Metal Label Classic Viognier by Berton Vineyards

A fresh, creamy Viognier with aromas of nectarine and peach complemented by floral nuances of jasmine, orange blossom and a hint of ginger on the finish.
Tasting Note
Fresh aromas of nectarine and peach are complemented by floral nuances of jasmine and orange blossom. Soft and creamy, with refreshing mandarin notes though to a
long finish with delicious hints of ginger and spice.
Vineyard
The Viognier grapes come from the Foleys Corner vineyard site, planted by Joe and Frank Sergi – who have been supplying fruit to Berton Vineyards for nearly 20 years. The
Riverina is a pioneering wine area established in the late 1800s but began thriving in the post World War Two era when many Italians migrated and started setting up small
vineyards. Back then, many international varieties such as Merlot, Chardonnay and Shiraz were planted. Viognier was planted in 2006 and remains one of the few
plantings of this variety in the area. This vineyard is planted with Ramsey rootstock, on a single wire trellis with vines spaced 1.8m apart, allowing for mechanical harvesting to
retain the quality of the fruit. The vines are drip irrigation if required. Berton Vineyards is part of the Sustainable Winegrowers of Australia and promotes sustainable cultivation in
its vineyards.
Winemaking
The fruit was harvested in the cool of the night, crushed, destemmed, chilled and transferred to the bag presses. After a gentle pressing the juice was clarified before a
slow fermentation at temperatures of 14 to 16°C using a selected yeast to optimise aromatics, and lush mouthfeel. After fermentation, the wine was left on yeast lees for a
short period and stirred regularly. The wine was fermented in stainless steel and after fermentation the parcels spent a short time sur lie, which helped to build mid palate
weight and imparted the soft, creamy texture.
